The police have arrested a person who created confusion through social media in the name of rescue and relief for those affected by the flood in Bhotekoshi river in Rasuwa. According to District Police Office Ramechhap, Gokulganga rural municipality ward no. 32-year-old Bhagwan Karki of Tose has been arrested. On August 10th last year, the government called for assistance in the 'Prime Minister's Divine Disaster Relief Fund' for the rescue and relief collection of those affected by the severe floods in Bhotekoshi. By misusing this context, Karki prepared a fake e-service statement by using 'ChatGPT', stating that he contributed Rs 120,000 to the said fund.
The police investigation revealed that Karki, along with the fake statement, posted his personal QR code on social media with the intention of collecting money from other people and deceiving them. According to Ramechhap district police office, he was taken into custody and further investigation was carried out on the basis of special information that he was running a fraudulent business in the name of government funds.
District Police Office Information Officer and Police Inspector Kamal Raut has said that anyone who creates confusion and cheats by misusing technology during a disaster will be brought to justice. The police have requested the general public to be aware of such misleading information on social media and to cooperate only through official channels.
